Douglas James Hagman, known for hammering down life's challenges with the same precision (just kidding, it’s a miracle he never lost a digit) he used on a stubborn nail, has laid down his tools for the final time. Born under the golden California sun on February 24, 1956, Doug's laughter and energy infused his every action until June 13, 2024, when he peacefully passed in Wilson, NC, leaving his tools for the rest of us to track down.
Doug's legacy is as sturdy as the homes he loved to renovate, starting with the heart of his structure, his dear wife Pam of Wilson, NC. Married for a time that defies the shelf-life of most Hollywood romances (and boy was he a romantic, almost to Pam’s chagrin), Doug and Pam shared over three decades of love, laughter, and the occasional debate over whether a spirit level could be used to measure how spirited one's spirit is.
With the same commitment (and occasional colorful words!) he applied to a challenging project, Doug raised two daughters who inherited his [can-do] attitude. Alex Hagman, of Chicago, IL, and Cortlyn Brennan, along with her husband Jake of Wendell, NC. His siblings, brothers Bob, and wife Sheryl, Steven, and sister Karen Taylor and fiancé John Thompson, all from California, complete his family blueprint.
They say a jack of all trades is a master of none, but Doug was the exception to that rule. A true renaissance man, he was as handy with a joke as he was with a jigsaw. He who believed that if you were going to do something, you might as well do it right or be hilariously theatrical in your failure.
And so, as we close the book on the final chapter of Douglas James Hagman, let us remember the man for all seasons, with a sense of humor that could carry you through the snowiest, crummiest South Dakota winter (with the help of his un-trusty tractor) and a heart warmer than any humid North Carolina summer. He’s surely shaking his head right now, embarrassed by the kind words shared alongside the corny jokes – but we’ve got the last word this time, just as we usually did.
Love you, Dad, husband, brother, and best friend.
