Dr. Louis E. Latour, Jr. 80, a beacon of wisdom and love in his community, passed away peacefully on April 14, 2024, at his residence in Wilson, NC. Born on December 20, 1943, in New Orleans, LA, Dr. Latour lived a life marked by dedication to his family, his work, and his passions.
He is survived by his beloved wife of over 28 years, Janice, of the home; his daughters, Angela Latour Ives and her husband, Jerry, of Charleston, SC, and Kirsten Goodwin and her husband, Chris, of Maiden, NC. He was a cherished grandfather to Matthew Ives and his wife, Sarah, of Columbia, SC, Danielle French and her husband, Paul, of Stuttgart, Germany, Sarah Beth Ives of Columbia, SC and Duncan Goodwin of Maiden, NC. His great-grandchildren, Owen & Mabel Ives of Columbia will miss his gentle presence and the wisdom he imparted.
Dr. Latour's professional life was characterized by his role as the Director of the Wilson County Health Department, where he served with distinction for over 25 years. His intelligent and wise leadership left an indelible mark on the community he served, and his influence extended far beyond the walls of his office. He was a respected figure, known for his ability to guide with both knowledge and empathy.
Outside of his professional endeavors, Dr. Latour was an avid gardener. He was proud to have earned the title of Master Gardener from the Wilson County Cooperative Extension Service. His garden was a testament to his patience and skill. Additionally, Dr. Latour had a keen eye for the past and being environmentally conscious he often used re-purposed items and treasures as a means of self-expression.
Those who knew Dr. Latour would describe him as intelligent, wise, and loving—a man who nurtured growth, whether in his garden, his family, or his community. He had a way of listening that made you feel truly heard and a depth of understanding that made you feel known.
In reflecting on the life he lived, it is fitting to remember the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson: "To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded." Dr. Latour's life was indeed a success by this measure, as countless individuals have breathed easier because of his presence, his work, and his love.
Dr. Latour's legacy is one of profound impact and enduring love—a life well-lived and well-loved. As we mourn his passing, we also celebrate the extraordinary life of Dr. Louis E. Latour, Jr., and the indelible mark he has left on the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him. He will be deeply missed, but his spirit will continue to inspire those who carry his memory in their hearts.
