Harvey Wayne Hopkins, a cherished family man and beloved member of the Kenly community, passed away peacefully at the age of 76 on February 4, 2025, at SECU Hospice House in Smithfield, NC. Born on October 17, 1948, in Nash County, NC. Harvey grew up with a deep appreciation for the simplicity and beauty of life's everyday moments.
Harvey is survived by a loving family that includes his son, Autry Hopkins of Bailey, NC; daughters Norma Kennedy and husband Terry Tarkenton of Raleigh, NC and Tracy Cook and husband Jerry of Black Creek, NC. He was a proud grandfather to Jerry Clark, Britany Clark (both of whom shared his home), Amanda Clark, Stephanie Kennedy, Ryan Kennedy, Jeremy Hopkins his wife Veronica, Kristian Hopkins his wife Haley, Brian Hopkins, Brandon Cook his wife Stephanie, and Charlotte and Bennett Cook and Kyle and Noah Pilkington. His legacy continues through his great-grandchildren, Emily and Alyssa Clark of the home, Aiden Wagoner, Cynthia Muscato, Isaiah Kennedy, Kiara Kennedy, Alison Holloman, Adryan Kennedy, Mikah Kennedy, and Mia Kennedy. The family will forever hold him in their hearts, alongside the memory of his beloved wife of over 30 years, Karen, who predeceased him. In addition to his wife his is also predeceased by his son, Steve Kennedy and his daughter-in-law, Christie Hopkins.
Harvey did not pursue formal higher education but was a lifelong learner, often referring to the School of Life as his alma mater. His career with the Town of Kenly spanned many years, where his hard work, creativity, and handy nature were appreciated by all who knew him. Harvey's contributions to the community extended beyond his professional role; he was an active and dedicated member of Victory Life Church, where his faith and fellowship were an integral part of his life. An outdoorsman at heart, Harvey found solace in the tranquility of nature. He was an avid fisherman, often seen with a fishing pole in hand and a smile on his face. His love for the outdoors was matched only by his love for old westerns and cartoons, which he enjoyed while indulging in his favorite snack with a RC Cola. Harvey's creative spirit was also evident in his pride and joy, a meticulously maintained 1966 Ford Mustang. His thoughtful nature shone through in the care he took of this classic car, which was more than a hobby—it was a testament to his attention to detail and his appreciation for the craftsmanship of a bygone era. Described by those who knew him as creative, handy, and thoughtful, Harvey was a man who could fix almost anything and was always willing to lend a helping hand. His ingenuity and problem-solving skills were a gift to his family and to the community, leaving a lasting imprint on the hearts of those he helped. Harvey's love for his family was unparalleled, and he took every opportunity to spend time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His presence at family gatherings was a source of joy and laughter, and his stories and wisdom will be passed down through generations.
