Mary Ellen Reilly Westmoreland, a beacon of knowledge and passion, passed away peacefully on June 14, 2024, in Raleigh, NC. Born on March 6, 1952, in Washington, DC, Molly’s life was a testament to her unquenchable thirst for learning and her unwavering dedication to her family and community.
Molly's journey began as the beloved daughter of Thomas Mulcare Reilly and Candida Palma. Her formative years were filled with love and laughter in the company of her siblings, Andrew "Skipper" Reilly of Ashland, OR, Jonathan "Dogger" Reilly and wife Ivonne of Orlando, FL, and Thomas P. "Poozer" Reilly of Portland, OR. She was a pillar of strength and support for her son, Henry Westmoreland, and his wife, Sarah Shales, of New Orleans, LA, and a doting grandmother to Beauchamp Westmoreland Shales and devoted lifelong friend, Frannie Ashburn of Raleigh, NC. Her joy was complete with the companionship of her faithful dog, Hildie. Molly was preceded in death by her cherished parents, her loving husband, Michael Westmoreland, and her stepmother, Inka Reilly.
A lifelong learner, Molly’s academic achievements were a source of pride for her family. She graduated with honors from the University of South Carolina in 1990, earning both her bachelor's and master's degrees in library science. Her intelligence and dedication to academia were hallmarks of her character, which she carried throughout her professional life.
Molly’s career was marked by her service as a director in various libraries, culminating in her retirement as the esteemed director of the Wilson County Library. Her passion for knowledge and community service was evident in her involvement with notable organizations such as Mensa International, the National Audubon Society, the Kiwanis Club, Rotary International Club, and the International Library Science Honors Society "Beta Phi Mu." She led by example, inspiring others to pursue excellence in their endeavors.
An ardent Catholic, Molly lived her faith through acts of kindness and her commitment to community advocacy. Her interests were as diverse as her skills – a lover of gardening, she found solace in the cultivation of life and beauty. Her melodious voice graced many a gathering, as did the gentle strumming of her classical guitar. Molly was an avid swimmer, a pastime that reflected her love for the serenity of water. Her written words were as compelling as her speech, and her zest for travel opened her eyes to the wonders of the world.
Molly’s favorite quote, "I wonder," encapsulated her innate curiosity about life and the universe. It was this sense of wonder that fueled her intelligence and made her the remarkable woman she was. Those who knew her will remember her as a brilliant mind, a warm heart, and a soul that uplifted others.
Molly’s life was a melody composed of her many loves and accomplishments. She worked towards the betterment of the community and fought for everyone’s right to access information and inclusivity for all. Her legacy will live on in the memories she created, the knowledge she imparted, and the lives she touched. She will be dearly missed by her son, Henry, her grandson, Beauchamp, her brothers, her extended family, and the countless friends and colleagues whose lives she enriched.
