Paula (Sosa) Acevedo

Paula Acevedo, 88, passed away peacefully on August 25, 2024, surrounded by her children and grandchildren.  She was born on June 26, 1936, to her parents, Juan Sosa and Juana Ruiz, in the beautiful town of Moca, Puerto Rico. She grew up in the beautiful island of Puerto Rico as part of a large family, and was one of 9 children.  In her very early 20s, Paula left the vibrant scenery of her beloved island home for the hustle and bustle of the New York City streets, and she lived there for over 65 years, until moving to Bailey, NC in 2022.

Paula was a woman of faith, and she was always looking for opportunities to share that faith with others.  On August 1, 1975, she was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses, and she zealously enjoyed sharing Bible truths whenever she could, whether in the door-to-door ministry, outside her apartment, or with family and friends.  She was always ready to share hope and comfort from the Scriptures with all that would listen.

Paula also deeply cherished her family, and was adored by her children; her son, Wilson Acevedo, and wife Jocelyn of Medford, Long Island; her daughters, Nancy Collado and husband Abel of Bailey, NC, Nelida Figueroa, and husband Jose of Sims, NC, and her niece, whom she raised like a daughter, Janet Francisco, and husband, Manuel, of Bergen, NJ. She also loved, and was cherished by her grandchildren, Wilson “Emmett” Acevedo, and wife Emily, of Sanford, NC; Andrew Acevedo, and girlfriend Vanessa, of Raleigh, NC; William Figueroa, of Sims, NC; and Amanda Stapel, and husband Jason, of Clayton, NC. Paula is survived by her children and grandchildren, and by her sisters, Rosa Sosa of Winter Spring, FL, and Gladys Sosa of Moca, PR; and her brothers, William Sosa of Moca, PR and Raul Sosa of Aguada, PR.  She was preceded in death by her parents, and by her sister Juanita Acevedo and brothers Mario, Brigido and Juanito Sosa.

Paula was known and treasured for having many endearing and valued qualities.  She was hardworking, she was an excellent cook and seamstress, and genuinely found joy in sharing meals with family and friends.  She was a loving person, with a great sense of humor and infectious laugh. She was known for her hospitality, and her home, the apartment where she lived for over 60 years, was often filled with family and friends. Her friends, family and members of her local congregation knew that they could stop by at any time for “Cafecito” and anything else she had on hand. Paula Acevedo’s life was a beautiful tapestry woven with love, faith, and the joy of countless shared moments.  She not only raised a family but also cultivated a community of love that extended far beyond the walls of her home.  As we bid farewell to this extraordinary woman, mom, sister and friend, we take comfort in knowing that her memory will continue on until we meet again in Paradise.

A memorial service to honor Paula’s life will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 7th, 2024, at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 1423 Forest Hills Road NW, Wilson NC 27896.  The family will receive friends following the service.

Paula Acevedo, 88, falleció pacíficamente el 25 de agosto de 2024 rodeada de sus hijos y nietos. Nació el 26 de junio de 1936, hija de Juan Sosa y Juana Ruiz, en el hermoso pueblo de Moca, Puerto Rico.  Paso su niñez en la hermosa isla de Puerto Rico como parte de una familia grande de 9 hijos.  Con solo unos 20 tantos años, Paula viajó de los vibrantes paisajes de Puerto Rico hasta las bulliciosas calle de la Ciudad de Nueva York, y ese fue su hogar por unos 65 años hasta mudarse a Bailey, NC en 2022.

Paula era una mujer de fe, y siempre buscaba oportunidades de compartir el mensaje de su fe con otros.  El 1 de agosto de 1975, se bautizó como Testigo de Jehová, y con celo compartía las verdades de la Biblia con todos, tanto de casa en casa, o afuera de su apartamento, y con su familia y amigos.  Siempre estaba lista de compartir la esperanza y consuelo de la Biblia con todos que estaban dispuestos a escuchar.

Paula también atesoraba su familia, y ellos la amaban, incluyendo su hijo, Wilson Acevedo, y esposa Jocelyn de Medford, Long Island; sus hijas, Nancy Collado y esposo Abel de Bailey, NC; Nelida Figueroa y esposo Jose de Sims, NC; y su sobrina, a quien crio como si fuera su propia hija, Janet Francisco y esposo Manuel de Bergen, NJ. También tuvo nietos que la querían mucho: Wilson “Emmett” Acevedo y esposa Emily, de Sanford, NC; Andrew Acevedo, y Vanessa de Raleigh, NC; William Figueroa de Sims, NC; y su nieta Amanda Stapel y esposo Jason de Clayton, NC. A Paula la sobreviven sus hijos y sus nietos, y sus hermanas Rosa Sosa de Winter Spring, FL, y Gladys Sosa de Moca, PR; y sus hermanos William Sosa de Moca, PR y Raúl Sosa de Aguada, PR.  Sus padres la preceden en la muerte, y también su hermana Juanita Acevedo, y sus hermanos Mario, Brígido y Juanito Sosa. 

Muchos apreciaban y valoraban las hermosas cualidades de Paula, y se ganaba el cariño de todo el mundo.  Ella era muy trabajadora, era una excelente cocinera y costurera y genuinamente encontraba alegría en compartir comidas con familiares y amigos. Era una persona cariñosa, con un gran sentido de humor y una risa contagiosa.  Se le conocía por ser hospitalaria, y su hogar, el apartamento donde vivió por más de 60 años, a menudo estaba lleno de amigos y familiares.  Sus amigos, familiares y miembros de su congregación local sabían que podían pasar en cualquier momento a tomar un “Cafecito” y cualquier otra cosa que tuviera en la casa.  La vida de Paula Acevedo fue un hermoso tapiz tejido con el amor, la fe y la alegría de innumerables momentos compartidos. No solo crió una familia, sino que también cultivó una comunidad de amor que se extendió mucho más allá de las paredes de su hogar. Al despedirnos de esta extraordinaria mujer, madre, hermana y amiga, nos reconforta saber que su recuerdo seguirá vivo hasta que nos volvamos a encontrar en el Paraíso.

El sábado 7 de septiembre de 2024 a las 3:00 p.m. habrá un servicio para conmemorar su vida, en el Salón del Reino de los Testigos de Jehová, 1423 Forest Hills Rd, NW, Wilson, NC, 27896. Después del servicio la familia recibirá a los amigos.
